Research Trail Assignment (50%)

This assignment is a scaffolded research project which will take up the entire semester. It is designed to introduce you to the process of researching a defined topic related to medieval Europe using a variety of in print and online tools. It will also teach you how to write a detailed proposal for a university-level research paper.

There are 4 stages to this assignment:

  • Part One: Primary Sources 
  • Part 2A: Finding Secondary Sources
  • Part 2B: Evaluating Secondary Sources
  • Part Three: Writing a Research Proposal

This assignment will be evaluated using an “ungrading” process. In that practice, all assignments are broken down into several parts to allow students to receive feedback as they move through their projects. Only the final versions of these assignments receive a grade which is reflective of the work engaged in for the whole semester. However, you must submit all parts for your final project to be graded. 

Engagement (25%)

A key aspect of this course is engagement with the course material through online and in class discussions and activities.

Exams (25%)

This course has a take home midterm exam and a regular final exam.

Take home midterm (10%):

  • Exam questions will be posted on February 12th on this website and posted to our course chatboard.
  • Answers to the exam questions are due on February 26th to Moodle.

Final exam (15%):

  • Will take place during the UNBC final exam period.
  • All questions will be shared via a study guide in advance of the final exam.
