#18-Medieval LGBTQ+ people

If this class, we will not be discussing whether or not LGBTQ people existed in the medieval period. We know they did. What we will explore are the challenges of working with the surviving evidence to get a full picture of what their lives were like. Most of the evidence, like the trial record I’ve assigned for reading today, is legal–framing the person as having committed a crime of some kind. But there are ways to read such sources to unpack their relationships with others, their daily lives, how they and others perceived them. That is what our focus will be on.

If you’d like more readings on this topic, please let me know.
