Preparation:

This is a question I asked Group One for the online discussion to reflect on as well for our class. How is the theme of “obedience” present in our readings for today? That is a theme I’d like to explore as it is a crucial one for our topic today!

  • SMR, 2.1 “The Iconoclastic argument: Synod of 754“; 2.4 “Umayyad diplomacy: the Treaty of Tudmir (713)”

Preparation:

The discussion in A Short History of the Middle Ages on iconoclasm will help prepare you for reading document 2.1 on the synod of 754. What is an icon? Look for some examples of icons from the Byzantine empire but also maybe some modern ones as well! We’ll look at some in class too.
