January 24th Readings and Preparation

Readings:

  • SH, 135-140.
  • SMR, 4.11 “The Vikings as they say themselves: Egil’s Saga (10th cent/13th cent.)”; 4.12 “The Vikings as the English saw them: The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle (c. 1048?)”

Preparation:

These two documents are different types of sources. One is a saga–originally an oral history or story then written down from the perspective of the Vikings. The other is a “chronicle” which is also a history but with considerably less narrative style, including briefer entries. How can these different types of sources aid us in our analysis of the Vikings?
